Glossary / Stoicism

Stoicism is an ancient philosophy, first rooted in Greece and then further developed in Rome. The early stoics were dealing with many different topics, but most of their writings are lost. What we think of today when we hear the term “stoicism” are the writings and ideas of mainly three philosophers: Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus. All three were primarily thinking about ethical issues and tried to answer the question of what a “good life” is.

Stoicism has also become an important inspiration for modern psychology and psychotherapy over the last few centuries. The texts of the three best-known Stoic authors are often referred to as the origin of self-help literature.
